Bye bye Passy!

January 12, 2012

Jack did it! He gave up his pacifier! This momma is so proud of him. We went for a dentist visit and she said it was slightly affecting his teeth, and we were already thinking it was time to say bye, so we did! Dr. Holly recommended that we cut his pacifier and go slow and it worked great! We use a Nuk pacifier and the dentist assured me that it is not a choking hazard- it just loses its sucking ability!

In case you’re interested in the details, here’s what we did. Jack will be 20 months in a few days.
Days 1-4- We rounded up all of his pacifiers and then made sure we only gave one to him in the bed. We had been really relaxed about when he could have it and therefore he had it in his mouth 24/7. When he asked for it, we just told him it was for night night, then distracted him and he was fine!
Days 5-6- After adjusting to that, we cut the very, very tip of one of his pacifiers and gave it to him one day when we were in the car and it was nap time. Since it has no suction, he just chewed on it and rubbed it on his face. He was so tired and the car always helps him sleep, so he fell asleep great with the cut one.
Days 7-10- We gave him that passy for nap time. He slept better than normal {took a three hour nap!} so I decided to go ahead and give him the cut one for bedtime too, and he slept ALL night, every night, with the cut one!
Days 11 (yesterday)- I cut it even more- probably 1/3 of it was gone. He slept 2 hours for nap time, so clearly he is fine without sucking on it. Then last night he went to sleep at Jenn’s house while we were at community group. I left his passy on accident at their house, but he was so sleepy when we transferred him to his bed, we decided to try it without one at all.

He slept until 7:30 this morning, with no pacifier. Yay Jack!!!!

I was really dreading giving it up, but now I know he was ready and I’m so glad we chose to do it. We’re off to Target today to get him a little treat for doing so great!

Love this big boy!

I hear ya! I was really wanting to hold onto it for a lot longer, but he did so good! He hasn’t driven me bananas, yet, so I’m thinking we’re going to be ok!!

I love comments!
